United Arab Emirates

Tax-free salaries, the largest Indian diaspora anywhere, and a three-hour flight home.

Overview

No country outside India holds more Indians than the UAE. Roughly three and a half million Indian nationals live and work across the seven emirates, running everything from construction firms to hospital chains to trading houses. For a first-time overseas worker, that density matters enormously: the food is familiar, Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Gujarati are heard on every street, and an uncle or neighbour who has worked in Dubai for twenty years is usually one phone call away.

The employment model is straightforward and employer-driven. A company offers you a job, secures your work permit and residence visa, and you fly in. Salaries are tax-free at the personal level, which makes even modest-sounding packages go further than they would at home. Recent years have added longer-term options that did not exist before: the ten-year Golden Visa for investors, exceptional professionals and outstanding students, and the five-year Green Visa for skilled workers and freelancers who want residence without a single employer sponsor.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi get the attention, but Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah offer lower living costs with the same tax-free salaries. Tourism, hospitality, retail, healthcare, construction and logistics all hire Indians continuously. The honest caveat is that residence is tied to employment or investment; there is no permanent settlement track in the Western sense, so long-term planning looks different here than in Canada or Australia.

Rough study costs

Bachelor’s · per year

AED 40,000 – 90,000 per year at local universities; AED 60,000 – 100,000+ per year at international branch campuses (approx.)

Master’s · per year

AED 55,000 – 110,000 per year, with MBAs at premium schools higher (approx.)

No personal income tax offsets costs, but Dubai and Abu Dhabi living expenses run roughly AED 3,000 – 5,000 per month (approx.). Generous merit scholarships are common at branch campuses.

Essay & SOP guidance

  • UAE admissions are less essay-driven than the US or UK, but selective branch campuses (NYU Abu Dhabi, Birmingham Dubai) expect a strong personal statement — treat it with the same seriousness.
  • Connect your goals to the UAE economy: aviation, logistics, finance, energy and tourism recruiters read applications with local demand in mind.
  • State your funding plan clearly. Universities want evidence you can cover multi-year fees, and a transparent budget strengthens your file.
  • English is the medium of instruction; most programs ask for IELTS 6.0 – 6.5 or equivalent, so mention your score or test date.
  • If you aim to stay and work, reference the UAE's post-study residence options for graduates — it shows you have researched the full pathway, not just the degree.
Everyday life in United Arab Emirates

Life in United Arab Emirates

Beyond the visa: settling in

A visa gets you to United Arab Emirates. Our pre-departure briefings cover the rest: the practical groundwork of your first month, explained before you board.

  • Housing: what to arrange before you fly and what to sort after landing
  • Money: forex, international cards and opening a local bank account
  • Health cover and insurance requirements for your visa type
  • Local essentials: transport, connectivity and emergency contacts

Eligibility

What you generally need

  • Job offer: the standard work route requires a confirmed offer from a UAE employer, who handles the permit application; beware of agents selling jobs without a real employer behind them.
  • Qualifications: skilled roles usually need attested degrees; India-issued certificates must be attested by the UAE embassy process before the visa is finalised.
  • Medical fitness: a medical test in the UAE covering communicable diseases is mandatory; certain conditions lead to visa denial.
  • Salary thresholds: Golden and Green visas have minimum salary or investment criteria, revised periodically; family sponsorship needs a minimum monthly salary that varies by emirate.
  • Age and character: workers are generally between 18 and 60; a clean record is expected and some roles need police clearance.
  • Visit visa: proof of funds, return ticket and accommodation booking support approval; overstaying carries heavy fines.

Process

How we take your file forward

  1. Offer verification

Before anything else, we verify the employer's trade licence, the offer letter terms and the visa quota. Fake job offers are the biggest risk Indian workers face in the Gulf, and this check is non-negotiable.

  2. Document attestation

Degrees, marriage and birth certificates go through the full attestation chain: state, MEA and UAE embassy. We manage the sequence so certificates are ready when the employer files.

  3. Entry permit and travel

The employer issues your entry permit. We brief you on what to carry, contract terms to confirm on arrival, and the medical and Emirates ID steps that follow.

  4. Residence formalities in the UAE

Medical test, biometrics and Emirates ID are completed after arrival, and the residence visa is stamped. Your sponsor handles the filings; we make sure you know each step and your rights under the labour law.

  5. Golden and Green visa cases

For long-term residence routes, we assess your eligibility against the current criteria, prepare the evidence of salary, investment or qualifications, and file through the correct channel.

  6. Family sponsorship and settlement

Once your salary qualifies, we handle spouse and children's residence applications, school admission basics, and tenancy guidance for the emirate you settle in.

FAQ

United Arab Emirates, answered

Correct for individuals: there is no personal income tax. A corporate tax now applies to businesses above a threshold, but salaried employees keep their full pay. Note that India may tax you depending on your residential status, so plan with that in mind.

Never pay for a job offer itself, verify the company's trade licence, insist on a written contract with salary and role specified, and check that the visa is filed by the employer, not sold by an agent. We verify every offer before advising a client to proceed.

Not in the Western sense. The Golden Visa gives ten-year renewable residence, which is the closest equivalent, but it depends on continuing to meet the criteria. Standard residence ends when employment or sponsorship ends.

For employer-sponsored roles, the employer usually covers the visa and often the flight. Your costs are typically attestation (Rs. 10,000 to 25,000), medicals, and initial expenses, so budget Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh before the first salary. Golden Visa routes cost significantly more in investment thresholds.

Yes, once you meet the minimum salary and accommodation requirements, which differ slightly between Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates. Spouses and children get residence visas tied to yours.
